Medication Policy

Charle Street is a non-medical facility. For that reason, certain restrictions are placed on medications permitted during a resident’s stay.

The following medication classifications cannot be taken while a resident of Charle Street:

  • Psychotropic drugs (drugs that effect the mind). There are three classifications- antipsychotic, antidepressant and antianxiety.
  • Prescription analgesics (pain relievers), with the exception of Ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve) either of which not combined with opiates.
  • Anti-Insomnia drugs.

Certain prescription medications are permitted:

  • Heart and cardiovascular related.
  • Diabetes.
  • Respiratory related –Asthma, COPD and Emphysema.
  • Antibiotics*

*Due to its highly contagious and dangerous nature, no one with a Staph/MRSA infection will be    admitted.

All medications, including over-the-counter, will be kept in the office and dispensed ONLY by the Committeeman on duty.

In the event of an alcoholic seizure or other medical emergency, paramedic response time is approximately four minutes. Medical treatment is rendered at Hoag Hospital. The First Step House of Orange County is not affiliated with Hoag Hospital.
